From these modest beginnings the Seattle Marathon Family of Events has risen to become one of the largest and most influential mass-participation runs on the West Coast, being ranked by Runners World Magazine as one of the top 20 marathons in the United States. In 1999, a Seattle Kids Marathon was added, which allows children of all ages to run a “full marathon” one mile at a time. 357 children participated the first year, and the event has grown to more than 2,500 in 2007, with over 3,000 expected in 2008. Through the years, Seattle Marathon runners have donated their money to the marathon’s designated charities.

Garden d’Lights
Using about 500,000 tiny twinkling lights, Bellevue Botanical Garden will be transformed into a winter wonderland every evening during the annual Garden d’Lights festival from Saturday, November 29th through Saturday, January 3rd, 2009, featured in Bellevue’s annual Magic Season. Inspired by plants found in Northwest gardens, hundreds of volunteers bundle strings of commercial grade outdoor lights into three dimensional flowers, shrubs, vines, and critters. In November, these creations are ‘planted’ in the Botanical Garden and, with a flip of a switch, this unique holiday garden blooms every evening from 5:00-10:00 pm.
Hundreds of volunteers design and make new flowers for the display every year so it continues to grow. In addition to artistic interpretations of plants, the volunteer team has created several charming animal characters. The large green frog remains a favorite and will be back by his pond in the Groundcover Garden.
